Rail transport in Finland
NEOT uses railways for transporting motor fuels from the Hamina terminal to its own inland terminal at Varkaus. Approx. 200,000 tons of motor fuels are annually delivered to the Varkaus terminal. In addition to this, transit chemicals (such as methanol) are delivered to the Hamina storage from Russia, which are loaded onto ships after intermediate storage. The transit traffic volume also amounts to approx. 200,000 tons.
The motor fuel transport fleet is leased from VR. In case of transit traffic, the rail cars belonging to the respective production companies are generally used.
Safety is paramount in case of terminal operation and rail transport alike. Rail car handling and loading bays are equipped with extinguishing systems, video surveillance recorders and collection system for leakage control.
